Has anyone seen my last nerve?

As a pastor who is knee-deep in the disciple making process, I can guarantee that you will at times find yourself frustrated. Making disciples is an intimate process, a challenging process and in the end, a very fulfilling and rewarding process.

Making disciples is completely different from that of evangelism or even focusing on church growth.

The art of making disciples calls for pouring of yourself, teaching and imparting, and empowering those the Father has sent to you.

Jesus had 12 of them. He ate with them, traveled with them, worked ministry with them, taught them and encouraged them.

Twelve men hand-picked by the Father, who would then eventually turn the world upside down for the cause of Christ.

But the road getting them there was bumpy and at times frustrating.

Jesus even had His moments.

There are several occasions throughout the gospels where Jesus asked them, "Are you so dull?" Translated, you're still not getting this? You still don't understand? Jesus even asked them, "How long do you think I'm going to be with you?" (see Mark 9:19)

Then, a few were concerned about positions of power and prestige (see Mark 10:35-41). This is highly frustrating to a leader! Here you are trying to impart wisdom and they are worried about who gets to be seen.

Even on the cusp of Jesus betrayal and death He asked them, could you not watch and pray one hour with me (see Mark 14:37-38)?

So even Jesus experienced moments of frustration with those He was teaching.

And I can assure you, you will have yours too.

I remember asking my husband once, "Is this thing on?" I was tapping my pretend microphone to dramatically inquire, "Is anybody really getting this?"

Jesus taught and poured for three years.

Three years.

So that should clue you in that the process is lengthy, but worthwhile.

At the end of those three years, the apostles went on to do marvelous things for the Kingdom. You and I are Christians today because of their work; because of the foundation they laid. Not too bad for a group Jesus once considered slow in understanding.

The key thing to remember is that the disciples eventually got it. It all came together and made sense and then they were able to run.

So those of you deep in the disciple-making process take heart. You're in good company; Jesus got frustrated. But in the end you discover, all the time and labor pays off and you have people who are strong in their faith, committed to the things of God and will in turn repeat the process themselves.

Be encouraged beloved.

Keep making disciples.

Excellent! This really reads like a personal letter of encouragement! If Jesus went thru all of this, who are we that we would even entertain the thought that we would not! For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15.
Thanks for your encouraging words! Keep the faith!

@Min. Marsha - You are most welcome. Again, one of the goals of this blog is to let the new pastor, the new minister know they are not alone. And we all at one time or another share similar experiences...even with Jesus himself.

@Karen - Cyber high-five (^5) sis!

@Evg. Julia - It is a marvelous thing to be called and used of Him! The road is sometimes filled with bumps but we see from our Elder Brother Jesus Christ, it all works out and the payoff is great!

This is good Pastor Lisa, this is really good! It is easier to jump hurdles when you know the trick to jumping them. It is sooo much easier to go through and do the will and purpose of the Father when you KNOW that there is a process!

I must say, I've never saw it this way before - I am truly a firm believer in "one plant & another water", well my dear Sister YOU JUST WATERED! Love ya

Pastor Ayanna! Thank you so much for your response. And the reason this is all still fresh is because we've been serving as pastors for four years now! We've served in leadership capacity throughout our 21 years of marriage but as pastors for the last four!

Isn't the Holy Spirit awesome?

This blog was birthed for that very reason...to let other new pastors know they were not alone in their experiences. We've all been there and done that...and it was time to share.

And your first "They come with the building" person! Told you they were coming! LOL! So how did you handle?

Thanks again.

Pastor Lisa,
Praise God! My former Co-Pastor once preached a message talking regarding finding our Elizabeths in ministry they are are the ones who are further along then we are.And because of Elizabeth Mary's faith was increased. I can see you are and are going to be the Elizabeth to a lot of women of God. Another awesome point is Mary's faith was increased and Elizabeth's baby leaped. So everytime God sends you a Mary what is in you is going to leap and for every leap God said "It is another level".

Oh P.S I did not even see our 1st TCWTB person. My husband had went to open the building and a man came in to wait for his train. The man was half out of his mind. So it reminded me of the mental lady you was speaking of. Needless to say he was gone before I got there (darn) LOL it just let me know the is coming!! Help us Lord!

Thank you for this encouraging message Pastor Lisa! Striving to coordinate collaboration between the church, law enforcement, community resources, local schools and the community to address issues impacting crime--specifically gang intervention is at times very frustrating and I find myself asking "is anybody getting this?" Yet, as you remind us that it is a process...even when it appeared the disciples did not get what Jesus was diligently placing in their spirit----they did indeed get it and 12 men changed the world!
